An Elephant in the Garden is a book set in the time of World War 2. It's about a family and their father who is at war. They are also dealing with their city getting bombed. The mother Mutti, is a worker at the zoo and she got told that all of the animals are going to die. So Mutti asked if she could take a baby elephant to give to her daughter Lizzie for her birthday and that is what happened. She called the elephant Marlene.

It was a good thing that Mutti took the elephant because not long after, their city got bombed. The family (Mutti, Karli, Lizzie and Marlene) escaped and found a place to live. They ended having a happy life and Marlene ended up performing in the circus.

I really liked this book because a was interesting. I recommend this book if you like stories about war. I rate it 8/10.
